The Only Donkey to Ever Steal My Heart

In Memorium

Gunner
The Minature Donkey

Who Knows When--2007

No one really knows how old Gunner was. We're thinking 50-something or somewhere around there. Gunner belonged to some very good friends of ours. Whenever we visited I had to go out and say hello to him. I loved hearing his "Hee Haw!" in the distance. I just can't believe I'll never hear it again. Gunner had a fine career as Mary's donkey in many Christmas plays and being loved on by kids. We loved him very much. But, no one loved him more than his Mama, Brandy. We will miss you, Gunner!!

Craziness

Hi! Remember me?

I'm sorry I haven't posted since Wednesday of last week. It has been crazy around here. Chris was in a wedding this weekend and he was doing his Groomsmen duties starting Thursday night and well into Saturday night. I missed him so much. But, it was beautiful wedding and we loved attending and supporting the couple in their new life together. Now they are off on their honeymoon to New York City! Whoo! Sounds like fun to me.

My Dad and Stepmom came for the weekend to watch Caleb while Chris and I did the wedding thing. I was getting ready for their stay starting Thursday. That required turning my laundry drying room/eBay staging area/extra storage room into a decent guest room. It took awhile but it turned out nice. Their stay was very nice even though I didn't get to see them enough for my taste. While Chris and I were at the wedding Caleb was taken to the mall for an Evening-O'-Fun. He ate Chick-fil-A and Dairy Queen and then played in the Soft Play area. Needless to say he was zonked when he got home.

Now Chris and I are home and enjoying our Sunday together. I promise to be back in full force starting tomorrow.

Laundry meets eBay

Okay, I found this over at Joy in the Morning. There is a mother of six children who is selling "Clothesline Fresh Pillowcases." Yep, she is selling a set of sheets she bought at Target, washed them , and then hung them out to dry on the clothesline. She says, "Experience a different era. Enjoy your country fresh pillowcases." She also offers some insight with her "Top Ten Questions I Have About Laundry." I know the joy that is line dried sheets and clothes. Aaaahh!! They smell so good. I just didn't know you could sell them on eBay. I give her credit for giving it a try. Maybe I should get in on the action. ;-) I've got a clothesline just waiting to go and we are in the country too!!

Ressurrecting the Journal

Journal and Pen

About two weeks ago I was thinking about my quiet/devotional time. That time when I spend a few quiet moments praying and learning from God's Word. I have come a long way in consistency and I pretty much have a quiet time every day.

The problem laid in the quality of the quiet time. I would often read from a devotional book and the Bible and then I would put my head back to pray. Well, you can probably figure out how that ended up. I would find myself WAKING up ten minutes later and one time, even an hour later! Not only had I slept through my prayer time but I also wasted that time not doing more productive things around the house. I always felt so guilty and the little naps were not that refreshing.

I know that there is grace for tired Mommies. The Lord understands our humanity and he knows how tired we can become. I also know that God loves children and he supports those who dedicate their time and energy to raising them to be Godly people. I do not feel guilty for the few times when I was just exhausted from staying up all night or chasing a fussy toddler and I just couldn't stay awake when sitting still.

It was the number of times I was allowing myself to fall asleep. I depended on the fact that "there is grace for tired Mommies." Every time I allowed myself to fall asleep and I woke up I just thought, "Oh well, I am so glad God understands." I know he understands, but I also know that he knows I was abusing his grace and using it to catch a nap. Not good. What could I do about this?

Well, enter the prayer journal. I have kept a prayer journal on and off for a number of years. I would journal with fervor for a few weeks and then stop for who knows how long. When I look back I can see that when I journal, those are the times that I grow the most. When I was considering starting my journaling up again, I even received a nice hard bound journal from Chris' mom. Hmmm. Could that have been confirmation?! I thought so.

I have been journal again for just over a week now and I'm loving it. Not only are my devotional times more meaningful, they are also shorter. I know there are times for a nice long devotional times. But, my quiet times these days are just more productive meaning that I pack far more into a shorter amount of time. My days at home are more productive because my thoughts are clearer. When I have something on my mind I write about it and/or pray about it in my journal and then it is gone at least for awhile. I can leave it at his feet by writing it out. Another benefit that I didn't see when beginning is that a lot of my blog entries start in my journal these days.

I am so thankful for my journal and that God pushed me just enough to get started. I am excited to see where this goes.

The Blessing of Diapers

Babies in Diapers

Like I said before, I've been learning a lot the past few days as I walk through this "valley" of tantrums and diaper rash. The Lord is really using this time to teach me some things.

On Thursday, I ran some errands with my Mother-in-Law because she was helping me out while my car was in the shop. We ran my errands first and then we went to Sam's Club. I love that place! Chris' mom was so generous and she bought me a BIG box of diapers for Caleb. I recently got my order of diapers from Amazon.com and I was set for the month but I NEVER turn down a box of diapers from anywhere. It was a real blessing to lug that box into the house and stack the diapers up on the changing table.

Little did I know that Caleb would come down with an upset tummy and go through ten diapers on Friday alone and who knows how many over the weekend and even now. I could have bought more diapers if needed but it would really stretch my grocery budget for the month. But, I was given a big box of diapers.

The Lord knew I would need extra diapers and He provided!! The Lord provides in the big things and he provides in the little things....even diapers. This is just one of the things I'm learning these days.

An On-Line Shopper's Best Friend

I am always in awe at what the Internet has to offer these days. You can catch up to the minute news, keep a blog like this one, seek advice, and shop.

Anyone who reads this blog knows how much I LOVE to do my shopping on-line. Heck! If I lived in a big enough city I would do my grocery shopping on-line and have it delivered right to my door. No such luck out here in the country.

Anyway, I also really like the fact that you can also get your coupons or coupon codes on-line. You don't have to cut any newspapers up. You can find these type of deals all over the Internet. When I do my Christmas shopping this year, on-line of course, I will be sure to look for some proper coupons. For example, I might look up some Chadwick's coupons for my Step-Mom or I could look up some Petsmart coupons to find some great Petsmart disounts for Eowyn's present.

I don't know exactly what I am going to get everyone for Christmas but I do know that I can save as much as possible by just doing a little sleuthing on-line.

I Am Such A Needy Mom!

Mother Bear's Love I

I have to say that I am really tired right now. I have been working steady in the house...cleaning, baking, laundry, etc. I have just now sat down to really enjoy my computer and blogging time. I can hear Caleb in his room making noises and that tells me that he probably won't be taking a very good afternoon nap today.

The past weekend has been something else. Caleb continues to have a very sore bottom even though the diapers are becoming less frequent. Changing his diaper is still quite hard but I think we are making progress. Either Caleb is learning to deal with the pain (seriously doubt it) or he is actually starting to feel better. Trying to take care of him and catch up with my much neglected house from the weekend is proving to be challenging. I am thankful, though, that I have the rest of the week to work on it. I don't have any major obligations this week and that makes me so happy.

In the midst of this chaos I have actually learned quite a lot. I am thankful that I have still been able to sit down each day for a few minutes to pray and ponder. One thing that God has made very clear to me is how needy I really am. I can't do this Mommy gig alone. I need His presence around me and this house each and every day. I need his strength. I need his wisdom.

One struggle I've had this week is actually being angry at Caleb for being sick. Why couldn't he let me change his diaper and give him medicine without a fight and scene? Didn't he know I was only trying to help him? Doesn't he know how much I love him and I would NEVER hurt him on purpose?? On Saturday, I think, I caught myself having these horrible thoughts and I prayed for God's strength and His patience. It was then that I started to see everything from Caleb's point of view. He was in pain and there was nothing he could do about it. He just needed a Mommy to understand and to love him through it. At that point I was ashamed of my previous thoughts and I realized how I am still a mere person who sins every single day....even as a mother. I can't rely on my own strength to get this job done. I need Him.

I think it is amazing how God can teach us things through even the simplest events. I have learned more about my need and dependence on God through my son's diaper rash than I have in so many other, bigger events. God is awesome like that, isn't He?!

Starting a Business The Right Way!

For those who don't know this about me, one of the things I would like to do before I die is to start my own business. Perhaps it is for the pleasure of knowing that I can do it and that I actually did do it. I don't know what it is. I just know I want to have that little entity that is mine and I am in charge of it.

Right now I am totally immersed in taking care of Caleb who is becoming more and more of a handful. I have my little side ventures that help the family budget like eBay and blogging. But, they aren't organized or even really not that focused. That is one reason why I think a small business would be great. I am always thinking about what my product would be and how I would go about running my little venture.

I am thankful I have a husband who has already walked down the road of starting a small business. One thing he did right was go see an attorney to be sure he was always within the law. He learned about how an incorporated business has to hold regular meetings of the directors and shareholders and adopt bylaws. He got all the proper documents the IRS will want to see. All that was great but it did cost money.

Did you know you can now get the same help online. You can get free llc forms and also assistance making sure you do everything in the lawful manner. You may also want to know the difference between a corporation and a LLC.

I strongly believe that creating a proper system of operation and doing all the legal stuff at the very start of your business. It may be teeny tiny and only consist of one person (you) but you still need to be covered. You also need to have that system in place for when, God willing, your business grows. It may be tedious now but it is worth it in the future.

Of Sore Bottoms and Tired Mommies...

I am sorry I've been gone since Thursday. Caleb apparently caught a TERRIBLE tummy virus that is going around here. He doesn't go to daycare but he does stay in the church nursery twice a week and the ChildWatch at the YMCA. I guess that is enough to get him sick. The dirty diapers are manageable. It is the AWFUL diaper rash he's gotten. I mean is bottom is TORE-UP!!! It is like I'm trying to torture him everytime I change his diaper and then it takes him a few minutes to recover. He doesn't want to sit down at all. I've been letting him eat his snacks while walking around. We've also been letting him go diaperless for about 15 minutes at a time and that seems to be helping.

We went to the doctor and she prescribed him some stronger bottom cream. But, she also said it looked like he could be getting an ear infection too. The virus from his tummy might've moved north into his head. I also found out he needs to go for his 15 month checkup. WHAT?! I thought his next appointment was at 18 months. Nope! He has shots he needs to get at 15 months. He was 15 months on October 5th. Geez!! Now, I must plan for another torture session checkup.

Caleb and I missed church yesterday and I went to the in-laws' house just so I could catch a quick nap. I woke up to my little boy walking away from me without his diaper and I saw those adorable little cheekers. Such a sweet boy.

So, needless to say I have been in ultra Mommy mode and more focused on his bottom than I care to be. We are going to the park this evening for our church's "Praise in the Park" event. We will sit in the grass, eat yummy sandwiches, and listen to awesome Praise music. We might even buy some ice cream. I pray that tonight will be exactly what Caleb needs and help him to not focus on his bottom either.

We will get through this. The Lord is Lord of all and sore bottoms and tired Mommies.

See you soon!

I Have Got To Get Control Of My House!!

This week I was walking through my house when I had a bit of a crisis. Okay, it was a MAJOR crisis. I realized how insanely cluttered my house is with adorable baby toys, annoying doggie toys, and useless knick knacks that serve absolutely zero purpose. I mean, how many times a day do I step on a toy? I'll tell you...way too many. I decided to take a week or two and devote my time to getting the house under control and then creating a schedule to keep it under control. I'm doing pretty well so far and thankfully, Chris is happy with my progress.

While I have been organizing all this stuff I have realized that I lack storage space. As wonderful as my house is, it severely lacks drawer space! I am in major need of some storage solutions , especially in the drawer form. I know my house would look 100X better if I just had a place I could throw things out of sight until I am willing to just throw them away for good.

I was looking around and I found this. Wouldn't those be perfect?!?! I think so!

Oswald Says...On Study & Obedience

All of God’s revealed truths are sealed until they are opened to us through obedience. You will never open them through philosophy or thinking. But once you obey, a flash of light comes immediately...

The only way you can get to know the truth of God is to stop trying to find out and by being born again. If you obey God in the first thing He shows you, then He instantly opens up the next truth to you. You could read volumes on the work of the Holy Spirit, when five minutes of total, uncompromising obedience would make things as clear as sunlight...

And it is not study that brings understanding to you, but obedience. Even the smallest bit of obedience opens heaven, and the deepest truths of God immediately become yours. Yet God will never reveal more truth about Himself to you, until you have obeyed what you know already.

~Oswald Chambers~
(excerpts from October 10 devotional)
I read this devotional today and I thought it was such a timely lesson. It speaks to my very personality. My natural inclination is to go to books when there is something I don't understand. I can research the fool out of just about anything. At one point I thought a career as a Research Assistant would be perfect for me because I just love to dig up the answers to questions.

I am this way when I have questions about God too. If I want to understand prayer, the Holy Spirit, the Resurrection, hope, or whatever I will go and find myself a book, a devotional, or an article and try to find my answers there. Oftentimes many of my questions are answered but I am always left wanting. Yes, I now have head knowledge and I understand the concept but it just isn't real to me. I may understand the theology of the Holy Spirit, but I don't KNOW the Holy Spirit. It is quite frustrating. How can all my efforts leave me empty? I am putting my focus in learning about God and not something trivial, wouldn't He bless me for that and give me a deeper understanding? Hmmmm.

I had one of those "Ah Hah!" moments this afternoon when I picked up my copy of My Utmost For His Highest and read this devotional. Wow! So, God will reveal truth to me only when I have shown him obedience. When he gives me a nugget of truth and I grab it and use it in obedience He will give me another nugget of truth. Interesting! I think I've really found something here.

Yes, all my book learning has its place. Proper theology is very important and I will always pursue it. But, now I think I might have learned how to take that academic study and make it real...from head to my heart as some might say. It is how I use that knowledge. It is in obedience. I am ready to start receiving those nuggets of truth. Bring them on, Lord!

Wow!! Not only did I give the house a good cleaning today I also really learned something. I think I can write today off as being well spent.

In Other Words...

"We are not built for the mountains and the dawns and aesthetic affinities, those are for moments of inspiration, that is all. We are built for the valley, for the ordinary stuff we are in, and that is where we have to prove our mettle."
~ Oswald Chambers ~

I can remember a few times in my life when I felt like I was on top of the world spiritually. I was having one of those "mountaintop experiences." I felt so close to God and all I wanted to do was spend time in the Word and in prayer. I would fill pages and pages of my journal with all the great thoughts and prayers I was having. I would spend so much time at the feet of my mentors absorbing their wisdom and then I would go to yet another worship service. I learned so much during those times.

But, then as I look back on those times I see that I rarely spent much time outside of myself. My focus was on MY relationship with God and I turned inward to nurture that relationship. I do not doubt that there is a time of inward focus and contemplation while on the mountaintop, but it is just a time.

I am sure many of you have heard about someone who was "so heavenly minded that he/she was no earthly good." I have most definitely had times when that explained me very well. I didn't want to "waste" my time with the Lord helping other people out. There are only so many hours in the day, after all. By the grace of God, though, I have become far more service minded. I have moved down from the mountain and now I am in the valley among His other children. I am serving Him by helping others to climb their mountain, so that they can come back down and help even more.

It is also during our times in the valleys of everyday life that our true faith is lived out. It is so easy to have strong faith when you are dedicating all your time and energy to drawing close to God. When you are on the mountaintop you feel so much closer to the Lord physically, mentally, emotionally, AND spiritually. Faith is EASY then. However, when we live our lives with children, husbands, houses, chores, errands, and dogs it is much harder to maintain that fervor. God can be lost in the details of life sometimes. But, it is then that true faith is shown and known. It is when we actively choose to spend time with Him during busy days that He is most glorified.

I look forward to the day that I can have another time on my mountain. Perhaps it will be on a church spiritual retreat or even in the comforts of my own home. When the time comes and I need a spiritual refresher I am sure that he Lord will bring me a mountain. Till then I am content to serve my Lord right here in this valley among those he created and loves.

Go visit Laurel Wreath to learn from other ladies.

This Is the Place!

This is the place where we gather our emotions.
This is the place where we leave the commotion.
This is the place where we mothers sneak away.
Even it it's for a few moments each day.

This is the place that all moms know
This is the place where all moms go.
This is the place with its porcelain chair
Where we sit 'til we hear "Mommy, are you in there?"

This is the place that gives us serenity.
This is the place that keeps our sanity.
This is a place that hasn't been found out.

We'd like to call it our "Bathroom Hide-out."

I'm Ready For A White Christmas!!

A couple of weeks ago Chris and I, along with Chris' sister and her Hubby, decided to go to Rockford, Illinois for Christmas. Being that we live here in SE Georgia there is no real need for a heavy coat but I know there is in ILL. So, Chris' Mom was generous enough to buy Caleb a proper coat. Doesn't he look cute?!?! You can probably tell that it is still quite warm down here. Look at those cute, white legs! He's got his Mama's fair skin. ;-)

Being Smart With Insurance

As a Stay-At-Home Mom one of my major jobs is to e in charge of the bill paying and and ensuring we stay within the budget Chris has established. As I've taken over this responsibility I have learned how much some required bills can really be. I used to have no idea what some of these bills would cost. One of those major bills is for insurance. Whoo! Insurance sure can be expensive. I very glad that Chris has budgeted for each type of insurance we have.

I have also found out that I enjoy discovering ways to save money on various things around the house. But, is there a way to save money on insurance? I believe that one of the best ways to save money on insurance is to just shop around. Get quotes from all kinds of providers until you find the one that works best for your needs and your budget. But, Sarah, how can I shop around for insurance when I have a toddler and one on the way? Glad you asked!

You can go online and do all your insurance shopping from the comfort of your own home. Just sit down, log onto the Internet, and get free insurance quotes for all kinds of insurance. There are various websites that provide these free quotes and SecureInsuranceQuotes.Com is one of those sites. You can fill out an application for quotes for all kinds of insurance including, car insurance, homeowners insurance, and term life insurance.

It is good to know that I have the option to shop around for the right insurance, with the right price, and not have to pack up half the house to shop around town with my toddler. Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing?!

"Do The Next Thing"

I came across this poem over at Enjoy The Journey and I wanted to share with everyone! It is hard sometimes to keep moving forward when you have no sense of focus or motivation, but the best you can do is "Do The Next Thing." I remember reading Seizing Your Divine Moment by Erwin McManus and he was discussing knowing God's will in your life or a specific situation. You many not know exactly what to do but the best thing is to "just do something" and God will steer you in the right direction. Your first move may not be God's ultimate plan but he will bless your willingness and efforts and then take you where he ultimately wants you. God just wants you to "Do The Next Thing."

From an old English parsonage down by the sea
There came in the twilight a message to me;
Its quaint Saxon legend, deeply engraven,
Hath, it seems to me, teaching from Heaven.
And on through the doors the quiet words ring
Like a low inspiration:
“DO THE NEXT THING.”

Many a questioning, many a fear,
Many a doubt, hath its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from Heaven,
Time, opportunity, and guidance are given.
Fear not tomorrows, child of the King,
Trust them with Jesus, do the next thing

Do it immediately, do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing His hand
Who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on Omnipotence, safe 'neath His wing,
Leave all results, do the next thing

Looking for Jesus, ever serener,
Working or suffering, be thy demeanor;
In His dear presence, the rest of His calm,
The light of His countenance be thy psalm,
Strong in His faithfulness, praise and sing.
Then, as He beckons thee, do the next thing.

Christmas Shopping Without the Crowds!

I am sure everyone out there has heard of Black Friday and if not, it is the day after Thanksgiving and is the biggest shopping day of the year. Some people observe Black Friday like it were another holiday and they stand in line at 5 am till the stores open and then they shop all day long. There is plenty of strategy to be had too. Most stores don't advertise their Black Friday sales until the Thanksgiving Day newspaper comes out and if you are an avid Black Friday shopper that can really eat into your Thanksgiving Day. Who wants to miss out on the food, football games, and naps? I know I don't!

Being the Internet crazy person that I am, I LOVE to shop online. It is so much easier for me to sit down for a couple of hours and shop that way than it is to drive 30-45 minutes (depending on traffic and usually more during the holidays) into town only to have to face the crowds. Ick! By now I am sure you can figure that Black Friday shopping has never been an option for me. But, that may change now. Through the website Black-Friday.Net I can view many Black Friday ads now and not have to wait till Thanksgiving Day and I can shop those same sales from the comfort of my own home. I can save the same amount of money as those crazy people in the lines and I'll be cozy at home eating my turkey sandwich. I am already checking out the toys for Caleb on the Toys 'R' Us page and a new camera from Circuit City for Chris and me.

Give your feet some love this year and stay home for your Black Friday Shopping. Oh, and don't forget to sign up for their email alerts! That way they can tell you whenever they post a new ad. How easy is that?!

Rain Days

The past month has been absolutely lovely down here in Georgia. We have had a good full day of rain at least once a week for the past month. Since Georgia has been in such a terrible drought lately, I am loving these days of steady rain.

I confess that I LOVE the rain and rain clouds. There is so much beauty to be seen in those stormy clouds as they approach you. The way the gray becomes darker and darker as the storm becomes more imminent and the thunder claps in the distance. I especially enjoy watching the lightning strike within the clouds as they light up the sky. I am that crazy person you see running outside as a storm approaches when everyone else is running inside. The way the pressure drops and the wind blows past my face is quite invigorating. When I spent six weeks in England during a study abroad program with the University of Georgia I saw many of my classmates become down and depressed because there were more cloudy days than sunny, but I was quite happy and I enjoyed my many walks around town and in the countryside.

Rainy days also bring wonderful memories created at home. Sunny days, unless they are way too hot, are usually spent going outside to play or run errands. But, rainy days are spent in the house playing, reading together, and cuddling. The rain forces me to slow down enough that I can focus more on my home and enjoy those special moments with my son as he grows up way too fast.

I have heard many people say that rain means life and that it is good luck if it rains on your wedding day. Well, I guess Chris and I got our good luck or the Lord's Blessing, as I prefer to call it, because it did indeed rain on our wedding day. In fact it threatened to rain the entire day with that lovely drop in pressure and wind but it never rained until Chris and I were safe in the "get away" car. The photographer said that someone must have been praying hard because the rain was holding off really well. Praying indeed. My then four year old nephew said he was praying hard for the rain to not come. Thanks, Bud!

I also love to see how things become so green after a good day of rain. The drought stricken ground becomes green and lush. Chris would beg to differ because it means he has to mow the lawn. I think it is lovely, though. The rain brings life to this earth and it is a beautiful thing. Even God thinks so when He puts his signature on a good storm with a rainbow.

In Other Words

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
and the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
by the light of HIS glory and grace."
--Helen Limmel--
When I read this quote I think about the day that I will be in heaven and I am walking towards Jesus, truly seeing Him for the very first time. I am confident that all my surroundings will completely disappear and I will be completely engulfed "by the light of HIS glory and grace." But, since I will finally be in heaven I will be able to look completely straight at him and not have to shield my human eyes. I will be able to "look full in His wonderful face."

About a year ago, I read an absolutely incredible, life-changing book called Safely Home by Randy Alcorn. I would highly recommend it....100 times over. Anyway, towards the end of the book (spoiler alert....but still totally worth reading) one of the characters has passed away and has entered heaven. He first gets to see faithful family members who have gone before him. He gets to meet Hudson Taylor, Stephen, and other martyrs. That depiction of heaven is incredible. But, then he is taken to see His Savior who is waiting for him to present a white robe and a crown. As this character approaches Jesus he is overwhelmed and falls to his knees and his focus is completely on Jesus. I can't even explain what Randy Alcorn so eloquently describes. I just know that it is what I feel it will be like when I get to heaven.

In the meantime, I am here on earth and I must face the imperfections of this earth each and every day. Those imperfections bring pain, disappointment, confusion, and disillusionment. Living in this world is so hard and it makes me tired. When I do look upon Jesus, though, and I soak up his Glory and Grace this earth "grows strangely dim." It is almost like I am transported to another place....a place with perfect love and comfort. Yes, I have to return to this world and continue on. But, the more I take the time to look upon the face of my Savior through Scripture, prayer, and worship, this earth takes less of an effect on me and I am not overwhelmed by it all. I become less and less of this world. I am just in it as I travel through on my way to living for eternity with my Lord.

Head on over to I Will Take It Lord... to read what other ladies think about this lovely quote.

Caleb Decided to Share

UGH!! Caleb decided he wanted to share his nasty cold with his Mommy. So, I may or may not be popping in for a day or two. Pray we get better soon. Thanks!
